I traveled by bike from north of Hanoi to Luang Prabang, Laos from 3/14-3/25/10. A Few Relevant Books
- A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain (1992) Robert Olen Butler, 1992. An American who spent 1971 in Vietnam as a linguist won the Pulitzer Prize for this short story collection –written largely in the broken English of Vietnamese refugees in Louisiana with profound insight into their country and what they lost in the war.
- One Foot in Laos (1999) Dervla Murphy. A crusty 67 year old beer swilling grandma rides through Laos just after it opened (partially) to tourists. She's overly romantic about the joys of poverty, but the book does give you a feel for the country. The good news is that the birds are back.
- A Peep Into Korea, Kevin Hayes (2006) Travelog by an Oklahoma professor, ex-cyclist-camper, who revels in learning about Korea after he marries a Korean. Strong on learning to love kimchi - missing an explanation of his mid-life romance. Picked this up at the National Museum on a whim - good airplane reading
- The Sorrow of War (1993): Bao Ninh, who lived through hell as a North Vietnamese soldier, writes about this and a touching but tragic love story -- a book I bought (pirated) from a hawker in Hanoi.
- Catfish and Mandala (Andrew Pham, 2000): A Vietnamese-American drives a motorcycle in Mexico then a bike through Vietnam searching for his identity
